Online and Hybrid OTA Programs

No accredited OTA program is 100% online: all require in-person labs and at least 16 weeks of full-time fieldwork. But 37 OTA programs in 22 states offer the most flexibility: 27 describe a hybrid, online, evening or weekend format on their own website, and 20 report to ACOTE that at least half of the program is delivered by distance education (7 report 75–100%).

What “hybrid” means for OTA school

  • Lectures online, labs in person. You watch or join classes remotely and travel for hands-on skills labs, often on set days or weekends.
  • Fieldwork is always in person. Level I fieldwork during the program, then at least 16 weeks of full-time Level II fieldwork.
  • Same exam, same license. Graduates of accredited hybrid programs take the same NBCOT COTA exam as on-campus graduates.

Frequently asked questions

Can you become an OTA completely online?

No. Every ACOTE-accredited OTA program requires in-person skills labs and at least 16 weeks of full-time Level II fieldwork. Hybrid programs move lectures online and bring you to campus or a lab site for hands-on work.

Which OTA programs are hybrid or online?

We found 37 accredited or developing OTA programs in 22 states that either describe a hybrid, online, evening or weekend format on their own website (27) or report to ACOTE that 50% or more of the program is delivered by distance education (20). The full list is on this page.

Can I work while in a hybrid OTA program?

Evening, weekend and hybrid formats are designed to make that easier, but fieldwork is full-time and in person, so plan for several months without your regular job.

Do I have to live in the same state as a hybrid OTA program?

Not always, but you must travel for labs and complete fieldwork where the program places you, and you will need a license in the state where you practice. Ask the program where its labs and fieldwork sites are.
