Best Occupational Therapy Programs, Ranked by Results

The best occupational therapy programs, measured by results, are the ones whose graduates pass the NBCOT certification exam year after year. 28 fully accredited OT programs had 100% of new graduates pass in each of their last three reported years, and the median ranked program averaged 95%. Below, 210 OT programs and 182 OTA programs are ranked on NBCOT’s own data, with no reputation surveys or paid placements.

How we rank OT programs

  • Data: NBCOT’s school performance results: the share of each program’s new graduates who passed the certification exam in each calendar year (graduates who passed in that year count, regardless of the number of attempts).
  • Score: the average of the program’s three most recent reported years. Ties are broken by the average across all reported years since 2021, then by the latest year.
  • Who is included: programs with full ACOTE accreditation that are admitting students and have at least three years of results. New programs in Applicant, Candidacy or Preaccreditation status have no results yet and are listed on our new OT programs page.
  • What we don’t use: reputation surveys, university-wide acceptance rates or advertising.

NBCOT data retrieved October 8, 2026. Full year-by-year results for every program: NBCOT pass rates by school.

The best program for you also depends on location, cost, length and format.

How are these OT programs ranked?

By the average share of new graduates who passed the NBCOT exam over each program’s three most recent reported years, using NBCOT’s own school performance data. Ties are broken by the average across all reported years since 2021, then the most recent year. Only fully accredited, admitting programs with at least three years of results are ranked.

Why not use U.S. News or acceptance rates?

Reputation surveys reflect what other schools think, and university-wide acceptance rates say little about an OT program. The NBCOT pass rate is an outcome every accredited program reports, measured the same way for everyone, and it tells you how well a program prepares graduates for the exam they need to practice.

Is a 100% NBCOT pass rate the only thing that matters?

No. Small cohorts can swing from year to year, and pass rates do not capture fieldwork quality, cost, location or job outcomes. Use this list to shortlist programs, then compare cost, length, format and admission requirements on each program page.

What is a good NBCOT pass rate for an OT program?

The median ranked OT program averaged 95% over its last three reported years. ACOTE also sets a floor: accredited programs must keep an average pass rate of 80% or higher over the three most recent calendar years.
