Frequently asked questions

Is there a shortage of occupational therapists?

BLS does not label it a shortage, but it projects OT employment to grow 15% from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the 3% average, with about 10,000 openings a year. Demand is driven largely by an aging population.

Are OTAs in high demand?

Yes. BLS projects 21% growth for occupational therapy assistants over the same decade, and about 8,600 openings a year for assistants and aides combined.

Is occupational therapy a good career?

It pays well (median $100,330 for OTs), is growing quickly, and offers many settings, from schools to hospitals and home health. The trade-offs are a graduate degree and, in some settings, physically demanding work.
