The North Carolina state has 5 ACOTE accredited Occupational therapy Schools which provide an entry level master degree or Doctor of Occupational therapy program. Plus, the state also has 7 ACOTE accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Schools which provides an associate degree. The license to practice as an OT or OTA is compulsory for the passed out students of OT schools.

Occupational therapy in North Carolina-

The occupational therapist, Occupational therapy assistant, and OT/OTA students have their own state association, i.e. NCOTA (North Carolina Occupational Therapy Association).

The NCOTA is a non-profit volunteer organization which provides a professional community for its members. The NCOTA is a state-based professional organization and public voice for the occupational therapy profession in North Carolina.

The main role of the association is to promote the occupational therapy profession, create public awareness, provide support to the therapist in continuing education and improve and maintain the quality of occupational therapy profession in the state of North Carolina. Occupational therapy License in North Carolina-

Occupational therapist and Occupational therapy Assistants are required to get a license from the North Carolina Board of Occupational Therapy (NCBOT).

The minimum requirements for the license are –

• Entry-level master degree or OTD degree
• NBCOT exam’s passing certificate.
• Application fees of $100.

Temporary OT/OTA License:

No temporary license is given by the NCBOT to practice as an occupational therapist (OT) or as an occupational therapy assistant (OTA) in North Carolina.

The OT program at Cabarrus College is designed specifically for experienced OTA’s to become an occupational therapist (OT).

The OT program will have two tracks:

1. The MOT track for OTA’s already with a bachelor’s degree.
2. The BSIHS/MOT track for OTA’s with an associate degree as their highest educational level.

The OT school offers a hybrid course, which has a 3-hour on-campus class every third weekend. In the hybrid course, the classes are on Saturdays and Sundays.

#2 East Carolina University (ECU)

The Occupational therapy school was started at the ECU in 1974. The school follows the guidelines established by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).

The curriculum is designed to provide students with the opportunity to integrate classroom learning with clinical experience and therefore includes several supervised, practice-oriented, fieldwork courses.

The OT school at UNC-Chapel Hill is a nationally and internationally recognized university with faculty on the cutting edge of research, practice, and community service.

The OT school offers entry-level master degree, along with this, the OT school also offers a Ph.D. program in Occupational Science. The Ph.D. program is for the individuals who have completed master’s degrees in occupational therapy, relevant social and behavioral sciences, or related fields.

The Occupational therapy school at WSSU offers an entry-level masters program in occupational therapy.
