The New York state has 20 ACOTE accredited Occupational therapy Schools which provides an entry-level master degree or Doctoral degree. Plus, the state also has 11 ACOTE accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Schools which provides an associate degree. The license is required to practice as an OT or OTA in the state of New York and it’s compulsory for the graduates of OT schools to apply for the licensure.

Occupational therapy in New York-

The occupational therapist, Occupational therapy assistant, and OT/OTA students have their own state association, i.e. NYOTA (New York Occupational Therapy Association).

The NYOTA is a non-profit volunteer organization which provides a professional community for its members. The NYOTA is a state-based professional organization and public voice for the occupational therapy profession in New York.

The main role of the association is to promote the occupational therapy profession, create public awareness, provide support to the therapist in continuing education and improve and maintain the quality of occupational therapy profession in the state of New York. The NYOTA is an affiliated state body of the American Occupational therapy association.

Occupational therapy License in New York-

Occupational therapist and Occupational therapy Assistants are required to get a license from the New York State’s Office of the Professions.

The minimum requirements for the license are –

  • Entry level master degree or OTD degree
  • NBCOT exam’s passing certificate.
  • Application fees of $294.

Temporary OT/OTA License:

 A temporary license to practice as an occupational therapist (OT) or as an occupational therapy assistant (OTA) may be granted to persons who have completed the educational and experience requirements for licensure and are waiting to take or receive the results of the certification examination.

A limited permit is valid for one year and may be renewed for an additional year upon submission of an explanation satisfactory to the Department as to why you failed to become licensed within the year of the original permit.

#2 Columbia University

The Occupational therapy school at Columbia University offers an entry-level master degree in occupational therapy. The MSOT program is of 2-year duration but can extend up to three years.

The OT school also offers a dual degree program for the interested students. The dual degree program allows accepted students to receive an MS and an MPH during a three year time period. These two degrees taken separately takes four years.

The OT school also offers a Doctor of Occupational therapy post-professional program for the practicing occupational therapist. This program is an evening program and can be completed in two to three years of part-time study.

The Occupational therapy school at Dominican College offers two entry-level options; one is a combined baccalaureate/master’s degree and second is a Master of Science degree. The accelerated path offers a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science and a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy degrees. The Occupational therapy school at Mercy College offers Non-traditional, full-time, weekend MSOT program. This OT program is a 60 credit two-year full-time weekend program with classes scheduled every other weekend. The Occupational Therapy school at NYU  is one of the country’s top-ranked programs (OT program started in 1941). The school has a rich history of the occupational therapy profession. The Occupational therapy school at Sage College offers 2 pathways to earn a master’s degree in Occupational Therapy (MS). One is a combined BS/MS degree program and the second is a Master’s degree in Occupational therapy. The Occupational therapy school at Downstate Medical Center offers traditional, full-time, entry-level MSOT program. The program incorporates a variety of learning methods including didactic learning, active lab experiences, clinical fieldwork, community practice, and research opportunities.
