The demand for occupational therapy professionals is increasing in the DC. More students are now attracted towards the occupational therapy profession and taking admission in the OT schools. Occupational therapist and occupational therapy assistant work in a different setup in Washington, DC. It includes Hospital, schools, Rehabilitation centers, Home setting, mental health care, etc. The Occupational therapy professionals have their own association in the District of Columbia. The District of Columbia Occupational Therapy Association (DCOTA) is a state affiliate of the national professional association AOTA.

The DCOTA works toward the upliftment of the occupational therapy profession in the District of Columbia. The DCOTA provides support to the budding therapist and licensed OT practitioners.

The DCOTA is not a licensing authority of the DC and does not issue a license to practice. The Department of Health, DC is the license issuing authority of Washington.

Occupational Therapy Licensing in DC-

The Board of Occupational Therapy (Department of Health) regulates occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants in Washington, DC. The Board of Occupational Therapy evaluates applicants’ qualifications, recommends standards and procedures, and issues licenses.
The Board consists of five DC residents: three licensed occupational therapists, one occupational therapy assistant, and one consumer.

#1 Howard University

The Howard University’s Occupational Therapy Program is an accredited Occupational Therapy program leading to a Master of Science degree in Occupational Therapy (MSOT). The Department is one of the few providers of entry-level occupational therapy graduates in Washington, DC. The program has a rich history of excellence in leadership, graduating highly sought-after therapists, and developing national and international health professionals.

The MSOT program is a full-time 2 ½ year program. The final year consists of six-month fieldwork experience.
Early entry to the occupational therapy profession can be taken through the Bachelor of Science degree in health sciences provided by the Howard University. If the student passes the prerequisite courses along with a BS degree in health sciences, then he/she can take admission into the MSOT program.

#2 Trinity Washington University
Trinity Washington University’s Master of Occupational Therapy program prepares busy students for a career in OT. The OT program is a hybrid type, of course, offers weekend classes and online learning.

The classes meet 8 times each semester and emphasize active learning, practicals, and case-based problem-solving. The online instructions, including lecture, directed reading, and discussions, deliver basic and advanced content. The concurrent clinical placements in different practice settings provide opportunities for observation and supervised practice.

The MOT program offers full-time 5-semester program, followed by two 12-week full-time Level II fieldwork placements.

The Trinity Washington University also offers Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Associate Degree. This is the only OTA program in Washington, DC. Recently, the OT school has got Probationary Accreditation by the ACOTE.
